IDAHOBIT MAY 17

WHAT IS IDAHOBIT?

HOW TO GET INVOLVED.

IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia) is globally recognised as a day to highlight the discmrination and harm that lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, transgender, gender diverse, queer and intersex communities face, and to celebrate diverse LGBTIQA+ communities across the world.

Why May 17th? May 17th was chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.

“The Day represents a major global annual landmark to draw the attention of decision makers, the media, the public, corporations, opinion leaders, local authorities, etc. to the alarming situation faced by people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.” - May17.org

There are many ways individuals, schools or organisations can get involved and show their pride or ally-ship on IDAHOBIT. Here’s just some of the things you can do. Remember, our team is here to help (we’re kinda experts at this) reach out if you need some support.

HOST A FUNDRAISER

A fundraising event is a great way to celebrate May 17 - get in touch with us if you’d like to raise funds for a life-changing cause!

HOST A PANEL DISCUSSION

A panel discussion can be a great way to provide a platform for LGBTIQA+ voices, learn from people with lived-experience and spread awareness on best practices, inclusive language, ally-ship and much more!

We just happen to be pretty darn good at hosting panel discussions so, get in touch if you’d like to discuss hosting a panel for your next event.

IDAHOBIT IS FOR EVERYONE.

May 17 is now celebrated in 130+ countries, including some where laws still cause harm based on sexuality and gender identity. In Australia, thousands of initiatives, big and small, are reported across the country.

Despite organisations across the world developing themes, events and collateral, IDAHOBIT is not one centralised campaign; rather it is a moment that everyone can take advantage of to take action, on LGBTIQA+ issues across the board, in whatever format that they wish.

The Day is not one central trademarked brand, rather a day for everyone to celebrate and bring awareness to. So have fun celebrating and making it your own!
